Delete your account

Hypothesis · VanSquared

You can delete your Hypothesis account and its data at any time, either from inside the app or by writing to us. You do not need the app installed to make the request.

From inside the app

  1. Open Hypothesis.
  2. Tap You in the bottom bar.
  3. Tap Delete my account and confirm.

Deletion happens immediately. It cannot be undone.

Without the app

Email vansquareddev@gmail.com from the address you signed up with, asking us to delete your account.

We will confirm the request and delete the account within 30 days. We ask you to write from the address on the account because it is the only way we can tell that the request is yours — we have no other way to identify you, and we will not act on a request we cannot verify.

What is deleted

DataWhat happens
Your profile — name, year of birth, gender, countryDeleted
Every answer you have givenDeleted
Your blocked-accounts listDeleted
Your sign-in account itselfDeleted

What is kept, and why

Two things deliberately survive deletion. Neither is linked to you afterwards.

DataWhyRetained
Questions you published Deleting them would destroy the answers other people gave to them. Your name is removed and the authorship link severed, so the question stays and the connection to you does not. Indefinitely, with no author
Totals your answers contributed to They are counts with no identity attached — they were anonymous before you asked us to delete anything. Reducing them would change what other people had already read, and would reveal what you had answered. Indefinitely, anonymous

Your individual answers are never shown to anyone at any point, before or after deletion. Only grouped totals are ever published, and a demographic group is only shown once at least 10 people are in it.
